Smartphones to Smart-Drugs, Samsung churning out cancer drugs for Big Pharma

Samsung from Smartphones To Smart-Drugs.  Manufacturing Cancer Drugs for Big Pharmaceutical Companies.
The Samsung conglomerate broke ground on a new drug manufacturing plant Monday, vowing to take share of the growing biopharmaceutical industry by outshining rivals with hefty investment, speed and cost-efficiency.
Samsung is aiming to become one of the world’s top contract makers of  biologic drugs, which are made from living cells and blood components instead of chemicals to treat ailments from cancer to arthritis.
Our new plant has been designed to allow operations to continue throughout the year, almost nonstop,” Samsung BioLogics chief-executive Kim Tae-han told reporters on Monday.“This will allow the 180,000-liter plant to further boost productivity by avoiding interim shutdowns that are typically required for maintenance,” he said.
In a 740,000-square-foot production facility here, Samsung machines are humming day and night to churn out an unlikely product for the world’s largest maker of smartphones: cancer drugs developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.
The
Samsung Group’s $2.74 billion investment over the past four years in production plants and research laboratories like this warehouse-size one is the most visible sign that the South Korean conglomerate isn’t content being known simply as one of the world’s top consumer-electronics makers.
